Richness of the Inner Life of the IT Drone

Do you know what is an excellent way to spend a quiet, contemplative Monday evening at home? Sip at a tasty, slightly too-warm craft brew, which turns out upon later examination to contain twice as much alcohol by volume as most beers, while watching the tender opening to Act IV of an English National Opera production of Britten's Billy Budd on DVD. I am just kidding. This is an excellent way to fall asleep on your couch for more than three hours.

what was the beer?

I agree... opera is for sleeping.

I once slept through about 80% of a production of The Flying Dutchman, including the intermission!

Speaking of opera, Kevin Drum links today to a list of Condoleezza Rice's ten favorite pieces of music, and she includes Boris Godunov. Must be heartening to consider an administration even more disastrous than hers.

p.s. Also, Alex Ross notes that this is the hundredth anniversary of the premiere of Strauss' Salome.

p.p.s. Just to mention in passing, between Kevin Drum (for politics) and Alex Ross (for music) that's about 75% of the blog-enjoyment I usually get on a daily basis.

I think I actually spent many an evening in Malden, actually, drinking craft beer and falling asleep to opera on DVD.

If you've got the $8-$10 to spare, you should pick up a bottle of the Dogfishhead 120 minute IPA... it's a motherfucker of a sleeping potion (comes in at around 22% ABV).
