Quakin' Postscript

For the record, you're not supposed to evacuate from an office building during an earthquake. Just get under a desk and away from stuff that might fall on you. And don't stand in a doorway like they tell you when you're a kid: that's not actually safe.

Next up: hurricane preparedness! The west coast is the better of the two coasts this week.

Not that I was gobbling up earthquake news this week, but your Tuesday post had the best perspective of the reactions I read. I was already a fan of Ripley's book, if that matters; I bought it for some family member or another, maybe you, last Christmas after listening to the audio version last year. I haven't been super safety-minded since then but it has had two concrete effects on my behavior: I now read the airplane safety card before every takeoff, and I took my office building up on a CPR certification course that it offered in the spring.

You East Coast folk be careful with the hurricane. Hopefully your impact in NYC will be, like the quake, only very lightly apocalyptic in nature.
