File Under "Hopefully Not Prophetic"

An ominous moment at the end of a quiet workday: I log on to the county library's website to extend my checkout of Roger Angell's collection of baseball essays, Once More Around the Park, but the renewal fails with the following message.

Item not renewed: Patron expires before duedate

The due date is July 8th. I don't like it; I don't like it at all.

I just tried to renew a book at my local (city) library and got this same message. Baffled - I renew online often and never got such a message. Googled and found your post -

Uh... how are you?!!!!!

When I jokingly posted this, I don't think I had any idea that I'd try to address the issue seriously six years in the future. But I'm happy to try! In fact I'm kind of sorry I didn't notice the 2009 comment and try then.

If I remember right, the issue seemed to be that my library card was up for renewal very soon, before the book's new due date had it been renewed. So I figured that the system determined that my account with the library (called a "patron") would expire soon and wouldn't complete the renewal before I got a new library card / account. Thus "Patron expires before duedate".

The issue went away once I did get a new card and I never followed up with the Arlington County Library as to what caused it, but I would recommend talking to a librarian. If I'm right they should be able to process your renewal to clear it up. They can probably help if I'm wrong about it, too.

I did survive past 7/8/2006, at any rate, so the worst case scenario did not come to pass.
