Maynard Ferguson, dead at 78. Even though I didn't play trumpet he'll always remind me of high school marching band music.

Yes, I can still hear the sound of a row of high-school jazz ensemble trumpeters trying to take everything up two octaves.
Maynard was never my thing — sure the stratospheric register was his & his alone, but it wasn't a really interesting sound to me.
Also I never really liked my jazz mixed with disco or funk, even the most legitimate echt-jazz/funk, Miles Davis etc. Maybe I should come back to that, and I'll see the light like I finally did this year with certain shows by Sondheim.
