Thursday Link-lend

Everything Kyle Gann has written during the last two or three weeks has been unusually good, but make sure you read his squirrel anecdote from late December. Small gem of writing there.

Accessible to a wider audience than his usual postmodern music theory beat, too. (Nothing against that, of course. Neat bit on Morton Feldman recently, too.)

Last night in the car I was listening to This American Life whose show was entitled "It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time." Applying that to my life, it would take way more than an hour to discuss all the cases.

Like the squirrel in our backyard. Not blessed with one of those spinny gizzies, I went out last Sunday morning to scare the fat, healthy & well-fed squirrel off of our feeder. It was another of those unseasonably warm January days we had, and I was in bare feet. Why not?
The squirrel, in its panic, scampered like crazy to get away from me, and ended up running over my left foot, puncturing the skin on my second toe in the process.

I didn't think much of it; put on some antibiotic & got on with things. Then on Wednesday morning the toe was swollen & sore, and now I'm on 2 antibiotics & have to sit with my leg elevated.

This morning the squirrel was sitting happily on the bird feeder having his breakfast. Very neat to get a nice close-up view of the animal. And at least when he eats he needs all 4 hands to hang on, so he doesn't spill much...

Good story; I hope you haven't lost that toe yet. I guess the moral is to be extra careful with squirrel-induced wounds, since you don't know where their feet have been.
